Caster Semenya

Caster Semenya, the 18-year old middle-distance gold medal runner and world champion has become the center of one of the biggest gender scandals in sport history. After raised questions of her gender and her physique, she was forced by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) to take gender test.

Semenya won gold in the 800 metres at the 2009 World Championships in Athletics in Berlin with a time of 1:55:45 in the final.

After the "golden girl" won her gold medal victory at the 2009 World Championships, she was threatened by officials to have her title stripped and banned for eligibility to compete as a woman in athletics events. The (IAAF) tests revealed that she is a hermaphrodite, which means she has both male and female sexual organs. The tests showed that "she has no womb and produces testosterone levels three times higher than the normal woman."

Semenya's mother and close family insist that she is 100% woman and her birth certificate even shows that she was born "female." But officials say that their word is not enough to convince a governing body who feel Semenya's muscular physique and extraordinary performances raises doubt.

Personally, I think it's easy for people to get caught up with the rare story of Semenya's condition. But let's not forget, she is still a teenager, who is now a center of an embarrassing and humiliating worldwide scandal. I feel bad for Semenya who is being patronized for the way she was born. I honestly think that this entire humiliating situation started from pure jealousy towards Semenya. Let's just hope for the sake of everyone's sanity that "intersexual" plays a part in the confusion and conclusion.
